273: Revocation of infringement notice before payment made

You could also call this:

"Cancelling a fine notice before you pay"

Illustration for Local Government (Water Services) Act 2025

If you get an infringement notice, the compliance officer can cancel it before you pay the fee. They can also cancel it before a court orders you to pay a fine under section 21 of the Summary Proceedings Act 1957. The compliance officer must tell you that your notice has been cancelled.

The compliance officer must make sure you know your notice has been cancelled. They have to take reasonable steps to inform you about the cancellation.

If your infringement notice is cancelled before you pay the fee, it does not stop any further action from being taken against you for the same matter, as described in section 270(1)(a) or (b).
