This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Illustration for Arms Bill

In this proposed law, a restricted weapon means something that the Governor-General says is restricted. This can be a firearm or something else, but it does not include an anti-personnel mine or a cluster munition. You can find out what these are by looking at the Anti-Personnel Mines Prohibition Act 1998 and the Cluster Munitions Prohibition Act 2009. A restricted weapon also includes a major part of a firearm that is declared restricted. The Governor-General makes this decision using an Order in Council under section 362. This decision will help decide what is a restricted weapon in this proposed law. If something is declared a restricted weapon under this proposed law, it will be treated as such. This means that the rules around restricted weapons will apply to it. You can find out more about what this means by reading the rest of the proposed law.
