This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

The Governor-General can make a special rule about what guns, magazines, and ammunition are restricted. You need to know that this rule is made after the Secretary for Justice talks to the chief executive and the Police. The Governor-General can say that some semi-automatic firearms, pump-action firearms, magazines, and ammunition are restricted. The Governor-General's rule is a type of secondary legislation, which means it has to follow certain rules, like being published in a certain way, as outlined in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019. You can find out more about this in the Legislation Act 2019. The rule also has to be confirmed by a law passed by Parliament, as explained in subpart 3 of Part 5 of the Legislation Act 2019.
