This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

"Who gets to be on the group that advises the government about firearms?"

Illustration for Arms Bill

The proposed law says the advisory group must have a balance of people who own firearms and those who do not. You will see people with health concerns about firearms in this group too. The Minister chooses the members and thinks about their knowledge and experience. The Minister looks for people with knowledge of New Zealand and international arms laws, public health and safety, and firearms research. You might see people with experience in firearms safety, community organisations, or law reform in the group. The Minister can also consider other relevant matters. A member can be appointed for up to 3 years and can be reappointed. The Minister must tell everyone about the appointments in the Gazette. Members can get paid and have their expenses reimbursed according to the fees framework. The fees framework decides how much they get paid and what expenses they can claim.
