This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Illustration for Arms Bill

The Governor-General can make a special order to say what items are restricted weapons or high-energy airguns. You need to know that this order is made after the Secretary for Justice talks to the chief executive and the Police. The Governor-General makes this order on the advice of a Minister. The order can say that a specific item, like an airgun, is a restricted weapon or a high-energy airgun. You can identify these items by their name, trade name, or by describing a group of similar items. This helps clarify what items are affected by the order. The order is a type of secondary legislation, which means it has its own set of rules to follow, as outlined in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019, which explains how these orders are published.
