9A: Meaning of building product
or “A building product is something that could be part of a building or is officially declared as one.”

You could also call this:

“A building method is a way of using things to build or do building work, which can be officially approved or rejected by the government.”

In this law, a building method means two things. First, it’s a way of using one or more products or things when you’re building something. Second, it’s a way of doing building work that the Governor-General says is a building method through an official order.

But there’s a catch. Even if something seems like a building method based on the first point, it’s not if the Governor-General says it isn’t through an official order.

When the Governor-General makes these official orders about building methods, they’re called secondary legislation. You can find out more about how these orders are published in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.

Interpretation: Meanings of building product and building method

9BMeaning of building method

  1. In this Act, building method means a method—

  2. for using 1 or more products or things as part of building work; or
    1. for carrying out building work that is declared by the Governor-General by Order in Council to be a building method.
      1. However, a method that would otherwise be a building method under subsection (1)(a) is not a building method if it is declared by the Governor-General by Order in Council not to be a building method.

      2. An Order in Council made under this section is secondary legislation (see Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019 for publication requirements).
