Building Act 2004

Regulation of building practitioners - Licensing and disciplining of building practitioners - Licensing cancellation and suspension

296: Voluntary licensing suspension

You could also call this:

“A builder can ask to pause their work permit for a while and then ask to start it up again later.”

If you’re a licensed building practitioner, you can ask to have your licence suspended for a while. You need to write to the Registrar and say how long you want your licence suspended. The Registrar will then suspend your licence for that time and make a note of it in the register.

If you want your licence back before the suspension time is up, you can write to the Registrar again. The Registrar will then give you back your licence, unless there’s another reason why it should stay suspended or be cancelled.

Remember, the Registrar has to follow the rules when suspending or bringing back your licence. They can’t just do it any way they want.
